Asia eSIM plans: the validity matcher Airalo's guide is missing

The gap we’re filling

Airalo’s guide — “How To Choose the Best eSIM Plan for Your Trip” (updated 8 July 2026) — covers the vendor basics our eSIM matcher already attacked (no per-day math). But Asia trips add a dimension that guide never touches: validity. A 10 GB plan with 7 days of validity is not the same product as 10 GB with 30 days, and a regional Asia plan is priced per-day at a premium over a single-country one. So this is the second half of the matcher: days × GB × validity × country count, with the traps that expire plans mid-trip.

The validity picker

Pick by trip shape first, then run the per-day math:

~2× for coverage convenience. On a one-country trip that’s a pure surcharge; on a Japan–Korea–Taiwan itinerary it buys you out of three installs and three expiries to track.

The validity clock

Three different clocks run on the same purchase, and vendors don’t always say which:

Activation vs first connection vs purchase. D-SQ5’s day-0 trap still applies: Holafly monthly plans start burning at purchase, not first connection [Holafly FAQ, Sep 2026, carried from D-SQ5]. Airalo’s packages vary per eSIM — check before you buy, not after you land.
Top-up ≠ extension. A top-up adds data on the original validity clock; Airalo auto-renews at 10% data remaining rather than extending your days [Airalo, Sep 2026, carried from D-SQ5].
The Asia angle: short validity windows expire mid-trip. Regional and global packages often carry shorter validity than the trip they nominally cover. Rule of thumb: pick validity ≥ trip length + 3 days [inferred] — the 3-day buffer covers a delayed departure and a clock that may start at install or first connection, not at the border.

The hotspot + 2FA traps

Tethering is per-plan, not per-brand. Airalo’s own 9 Sep 2026 article confirms hotspot allowance is set per plan — some “unlimited”-style and data packages block or cap tethering [Airalo article, 9 Sep 2026]. If you plan to work off your phone’s hotspot in a Seoul café, verify the specific plan’s tethering rule first.
Data-only means no SMS 2FA. Travel eSIMs are data-only: no phone number, so any service that texts a login code (banking apps, WhatsApp re-verification) fails silently [inferred mechanism, standard for data-only eSIMs]. The fix, done before departure: keep your physical SIM active for SMS (data roaming off — SMS still lands) or move critical accounts to authenticator apps.
They compound: an unlimited data-only plan with no tethering and a locked-out banking app is the classic Asia digital-nomad surprise.

Unlimited isn’t unlimited

Airalo’s 9 Sep 2026 article confirms “unlimited” plans carry fair-use limits — cross the threshold and you’re throttled [Airalo article, 9 Sep 2026]. The published thresholds vary per plan; as a planning figure, expect typical fair-use caps in the 1–3 GB/day range [inferred]. Read “30-day unlimited” as “a daily cap you don’t pay overage for,” not a license to stream 4K from a night market.

What we couldn’t verify

Per-country Airalo prices for Japan and Korea — both price pages returned HTTP 404 at fetch time (14 Sep 2026); Thailand prices not fetched. All omitted per house rule.
Exact fair-use thresholds on Airalo unlimited plans — confirmed to exist at headline level only.
Other providers (Nomad, Saily, Ubigi) Asia pricing — blocked or not fetched.
