Plan it with verified data

Namibia is the dataset’s first Southern African destination, and the honest headline is a contradiction the country is currently living through: arrivals fell, prices stayed high, and the entry rules changed under everyone’s feet. This guide is anchored on Windhoek — the capital, where the fuel, the rental yards and the verified price data all sit — and it leads on the one thing most trip advice still gets wrong.
Who it’s for
You are driving. That single fact decides almost every cost, every day and every risk in this country, and the prices below assume it: a car, gravel roads, and distances measured in hours rather than kilometres. If you are flying into Windhoek to sit still — two nights in the capital and a lodge booking — the daily band here is the wrong tool, because the self-drive costs have already been spent by the time you arrive.
It is also written for anyone planning a long overland run through the country rather than a safari-facility holiday. That distinction is not cosmetic: the same two weeks cost dramatically different amounts depending on whether you are camping or booking the lodge circuit, and the community consensus this cycle is genuinely split on which end of that spectrum “a Namibia trip” actually means.
Costs, grounded
The verified floor is $722.30 per month for one person excluding rent — about $23.76/day — from Numbeo’s Windhoek page, stamped 2 October 2026, drawn from 515 entries in the past 12 months by 33 contributors (page stamp “Oct 2026”). Windhoek prices 60.4% below New York excluding rent, and rent 87.0% lower — and the NAD column on the same page ($994.99 net salary, 11.42% mortgage rate) converts at 16.6662 NAD/USD, matching the live feed to within 0.10%.
Here is the finding that makes this guide different from a Numbeo summary: the rent-adjusted month is cheaper than the rent-excluded one. Add a 1-bed city-centre apartment ($500.00), utilities ($141.07), unlimited broadband ($50.38) and a 10GB+ mobile plan ($26.24) and you reach $717.69/month — $23.61/day, which is below the $23.76 daily floor. Most destinations in this dataset go the other way. It happens because Windhoek’s rent is unusually cheap against a basket that is not, which the property page confirms with a price-to-income ratio of 5.53 and a mortgage at 70.39% of income.
Realistic bands above the floor [inferred]: $40/day budget, $85/day mid-range, $200/day+ the lodge-and-guided-camp circuit.
Food & drink
- Budget: inexpensive restaurant meal $11.41 (range $7.21–$18.02). This is the highest verified inexpensive-meal figure of any destination currently in this dataset — a fact worth sitting with before booking.
- Mid-range: three courses for two, $63.06; McDonald’s combo $6.01.
- Drinks: domestic draft $1.95, cappuccino $2.30 — the pint of Namibian beer is a fraction of what it costs at home.
The genuinely surprising line on the whole page is not a drink at all: Windhoek ranks 1st for expensive eggs (12, large size) among 30 African markets. If you self-cater, that is the number that moves your grocery bill, not the restaurant row.
Getting around
Fuel is the transport story, and it is a per-litre figure with no per-gallon equivalent on the page: gasoline $1.37/litre, so a 50-litre tank is $68.50. Public transport in the capital is close to free by comparison — one-way $0.78, monthly pass $48.05 — but that pass works because Windhoek is where you are parked, not because it takes you anywhere scenic.
The community’s self-drive consensus is worth reading as a checklist rather than a debate. The recurring items, in a r/Namibia thread from 10 Aug 2026: two spare tyres, a tyre gauge, a portable compressor, and offline navigation — with Google Maps described as “less than ideal especially out of the major towns/routes”. Speed is the other one: a November 2025 thread from a Namibian resident states plainly that the biggest cause of accidents is speeding on gravel, with 60–80 km/h the advised range. The FCDO’s independent line matches: “accidents are common on gravel and dirt roads” (still current 2 Oct 2026).
Visa
There is no visa-free entry to Namibia any more. The first line of the gov.uk entry page is unambiguous: “From 1 April 2025 you will need a visa to visit Namibia.” This is the fact most stale guides still contradict.
Both routes — visa on arrival at a port of entry, or an e-visa applied for online before travel — cost 1,600 Namibian dollars (~$96.00) for travellers over 11, and 800 NAD (~$48.00) for ages 6–11. Children under 6 pay no fee on arrival. A visa on arrival is issued as a multiple entry visa valid for the period you request, and your passport must have at least 6 months’ validity beyond your arrival date.
Two gaps we are flagging rather than filling: no overstay fine amount or cap is published on the page (it says only that you “could be detained, arrested or fined”), and working and volunteering are explicitly outside the visa-on-arrival process, so if this trip involves earning anything, this page is not the authority you need.
FAQ
How much does Namibia cost per day?
The verified floor is $23.76/day ($722.30/month excluding rent, Numbeo Windhoek, 2 October 2026, 515 entries / 33 contributors). With a 1-bed centre apartment, utilities, broadband and mobile included, a full month is $717.69 — $23.61/day, which is genuinely below the rent-excluded floor. Realistic self-drive bands [inferred]: $40/day budget, $85/day mid-range, $200/day+ lodge-and-guided-camp. The spread between the cheapest and dearest version of this trip is wider than the daily figure itself, which is why the band you pick matters more than the country average.
Do I need a visa for Namibia — and how much is it?
Since 1 April 2025, yes. A visa on arrival or an e-visa, both at 1,600 NAD (~$96.00) for over-11s, 800 NAD (~$48.00) for ages 6–11, free on arrival for under-6s (gov.uk, still current 2 October 2026). It is issued as a multiple entry visa for the period requested, your passport needs 6 months’ validity beyond arrival, and overstaying risks detention, arrest or a fine — though no fine amount is published, which we note rather than guess.
Is Namibia cheap or expensive? The two answers are both right.
The data says cheap: $23.76/day excluding rent, rent 87.0% below New York, and a 50-litre fuel tank at $68.50. The industry says expensive — the Hotel & Restaurant Association’s president described Namibia as “termed an expensive destination … not due to only the high airfares, but also the services offered on the ground” (New Era, 22 January 2026), and a July 2026 traveller put a two-person camping trip at €3,000–4,000 while judging it “isn’t too bad.”
They are pricing different trips: one is the camper and the other is the lodge-and-fly-in circuit. Windhoek room occupancy in 2025 “just missed the 52% mark (51.99%)”, down 2.5% on the year and 1.5% below 2019 (same source) — so the softness is in the beds, not in the vehicle.
Is Namibia’s tourism growing or shrinking?
Both figures you will see online are wrong for different reasons. The one we can verify is the MoET Tourist Arrivals Statistical Report for 2025: 1,345,168 arrivals, down 6.9% year on year (reported by The Namibian, 23 July 2026). A −3.2% figure circulating via Informanté and trendsnafrica could not be verified against the underlying report, and both outlet pages were soft-404 or blocked when we fetched them — so it is not published, and the two are not averaged. Note also that arrivals are a 2025 number; we found no verifiable 2026 arrivals figure this cycle and are not extrapolating one.
Is Namibia safe for solo female travellers?
The FCDO’s Windhoek-specific advice is the part to plan around: “Muggers often target tourists in Windhoek. Attacks may be violent and can take place at any time of day” (still current 2 Oct 2026). Community experience is frequently the opposite, and the gap is worth understanding rather than resolving — pick accommodation with on-site parking, avoid walking between districts after dark, and note that gangs “sometimes try to enter vehicles at busy intersections in Windhoek.” The same page’s practical point for a self-driver: insurance must cover gravel and dirt roads, and adventure activities need explicit cover.
Is there a digital nomad visa or remote-work setup?
No nomad visa is verified for Namibia this cycle, and we will not invent one. What is verified: a visitor arrives on the standard 1,600 NAD (~$96) visa, which is multiple-entry, while working and volunteering sit outside the visa-on-arrival process — so the boundary between working and remote-working on a visitor basis is exactly the question we have not verified. Connectivity is mid-pack: unlimited 60Mbps+ broadband at $50.38/mo (Numbeo, 2 Oct 2026), a mobile plan at $26.24, and Airalo local eSIM from $9.50 for 3 days / 1 GB. No coworking count or price floor was verifiable this cycle, so we publish none — confirm a desk in-country before committing to a month.
Do I really need a 4x4 in Namibia?
This is the argument the community has not settled, and we are not going to settle it for you. One 10 Aug 2026 r/Namibia poster recommends the Fortuner over a Hilux for comfort on corrugated gravel; a Namibian resident posting on 29 Nov 2025 says most travellers rent “a fully equipped 4x4” and that a common Hilux/Land Cruiser setup is standard; and a 4 Aug 2026 poster counters that they used a Fortuner across six trips and “a Suzuki Jimny would also be perfectly sufficient for your route.”
The pattern nobody states cleanly is that the axis is the route, not the car: paved corridors and main gravel are fine, and sand is not. One hard edge case is documented — a 31 Aug 2026 comment describing self-driving the Sandwich Harbour tidal flats as “genuinely not for first-timers, the tide wins arguments.”
Is October a good time to visit Namibia?
It is the doorway month, not the middle of the dry season. October gives you a mean of 23.8°C with highs of 31.8°C and just 12 mm of rain over 3 days (WMO 1991–2020 normals) — but rainfall triples to 25 mm in November and quadruples to 40 mm in December. The dry season proper is May–September, with July and August at 1 mm. If you want the cold dry days of July, this is the wrong month; if you want the last of the dry season with the wildlife concentrating around permanent water, it is the right one [inferred].
Safety
This is where the guide’s two source types disagree, and we are publishing both rather than picking the comfortable one.
The FCDO (still current 2 October 2026, updated 10 December 2025) is specific and it is about this city: “Muggers often target tourists in Windhoek. Attacks may be violent and can take place at any time of day,” and gangs “sometimes try to enter vehicles at busy intersections in Windhoek.”
The community says something close to the opposite — a 2 August 2026 r/Namibia poster describing the country as “super safe… never had any issue with theft”. These are not necessarily in conflict. The advisory is written for a short-stay visitor carrying a hire car and cash in a capital city; the forum testimony is from people who live here or drive the country regularly. Read the advisory for the tourist in Windhoek on their third evening, and read the forum for the empty road back from Sossusvlei.
The 4.1× campsite-vs-lodge fork, the MEFT park fee schedule and the solo-travel cost penalty are worked through in the Namibia cost post, which is where the per-person arithmetic behind this guide’s bands is laid out.
The real cost: money traps to know
The costs that don't show up in the brochure — and the ones that quietly eat a budget.
- Taxes & feesThere is no tourist tax and no visa-free entry any more. The visa is the entry cost: 1,600 NAD (~US$96.00 at the 2 Oct 2026 feed rate of 16.666207 NAD/USD) for anyone over 11, 800 NAD (~$48.00) for ages 6-11, free on arrival for under-6s, payable on arrival or online as an e-visa (gov.uk, still current 2 Oct 2026, updated 10 Dec 2025). Separately, accommodation levies collected on behalf of the Namibia Tourism Board are compulsory — but no per-night amount or effective date could be verified from any official source this cycle, so no figure is published here rather than an invented one. No departure tax was found.
- ATM & cashCash is the country currency outside Windhoek and Swakopmund [inferred]. The practical consequence is fuel: with the cheapest verified single-ride transit in the dataset at $0.78 and a 50-litre tank costing $68.50 at the verified $1.37/litre, card reliance and fuel planning are the same problem [inferred].
- Hidden feesThe vehicle is the hidden fee, and the community says so plainly. A r/Namibia thread from 10 Aug 2026 lists the real extras: two spare tyres, a tyre gauge and a portable compressor, and offline navigation — none of which are in a rental rate. The FCDO adds that 'accidents are common on gravel and dirt roads' and that you must check what insurance cover your hire includes (still current 2 Oct 2026). The industry frame is different again: the Hotel & Restaurant Association's president called Namibia 'an expensive destination … not due to only the high airfares, but also the services offered on the ground' (New Era via allafrica, 22 Jan 2026) — which prices the same trip as a camper or lodge, not as the Numbeo basket.
- Taxis & transportMetered and cheap on paper: taxi start $0.78, one mile $1.45, and an hour of waiting $15.62 (Numbeo, 2 Oct 2026). A monthly transit pass at $48.05 buys about 62 one-way rides at the $0.78 fare — so the pass only pays off for genuine daily commuting, not for a week [inferred].
- Budget bufferAdd 10–15%, and add it against the vehicle, not the meal [inferred]. The verified floor of $23.76/day excludes rent entirely; fuel at $1.37/litre, tyre damage on gravel and lodge-versus-camping spread are the three line items a Windhoek daily figure will not carry for you.
For solo female travelers
- SafetyThe FCDO's line is specific and it is about this city: 'Muggers often target tourists in Windhoek. Attacks may be violent and can take place at any time of day', and gangs 'sometimes try to enter vehicles at busy intersections in Windhoek' (still current 2 Oct 2026, updated 10 Dec 2025). That sits against community experience of the opposite — a 2 Aug 2026 r/Namibia poster describing the country as 'super safe… never had any issue with theft'. Read both: long-stay and recurring visitors report a different city from short-stay tourists, and the advisory is the one written for the short-stay visitor. Emergency number 10111 for police [inferred].
- At nightDaytime city movement is straightforward and night falls early — the dry season's clear nights are cold, and the 16°C October day-night swing means you will want a layer at 9pm [inferred]. Prefer a property with on-site parking and avoid walking between districts after dark, which is the FCDO's targeted-crime advice applied rather than repeated [inferred].
- Dress & culturePractical, not moralising: the same advice page flags adventure activities like quad biking, dune boarding and hot air ballooning as needing specific insurance cover, which is also the clearest sign of what the standard travel policy will exclude [inferred].
- Where to stayWindhoek is the practical base for a self-drive trip — most rentals, fuel and spares sit in the capital, and the FCDO's driving guidance is written from here. Swakopmund is the other anchor community, though the specific safety picture there is thin in what we could verify this cycle [inferred].
Connectivity & remote work
- SIM / eSIMVerified from Airalo: local packages from $9.50 (3 days / 1 GB) and $28.00 (3 days / 3 GB). The unlimited-daily ladder that every other destination in this dataset carries does not render on the Namibia page this cycle, so no unlimited figure is published [inferred].
- Wi-FiUnlimited fixed broadband at $50.38/mo for 60 Mbps+ (Numbeo, 2 Oct 2026) — mid-pack for this dataset, and materially above the $26.24 mobile plan it would replace. The FCDO's own driving note is the practical connectivity caveat: you need offline navigation off the main routes, because a r/Namibia poster from 10 Aug 2026 warns Google Maps is 'less than ideal especially out of the major towns/routes' [inferred-social].
- CoworkingNot verified this cycle. No Windhoek coworking count or price floor was retrievable from a source we trust, and rather than import a plausible number we publish none. Budget on the $50.38/mo broadband figure as the remote-work cost, and confirm a desk in-country before booking a month [inferred].
- Nomad visaNo digital-nomad visa is verified for Namibia this cycle [inferred]. The route that does exist is the standard one: a visa on arrival or an e-visa at 1,600 NAD (~$96) (gov.uk, still current 2 Oct 2026) — issued as a multiple-entry visa valid for the period requested — with working and volunteering explicitly outside the visa-on-arrival process, so remote work on a visitor basis is a different question from employment and one we have not verified.

A separately circulated -3.2% figure (Informanté 30 Jun 2026 / trendsnafrica 27 Jun 2026) could NOT be verified against the underlying report and the outlet pages were soft-404 or blocked, so only the -6.9% figure is published and the two are not averaged

Deliberately NOT published this cycle: any per-night Namibia Tourism Board bed/levy AMOUNT or effective date (the only located description, an opinion column, calls it 'a tiny percentage of the room rate' with no figure and no date — the same gap the 09-28 scout flagged, so it stays a gap); a 2026 arrivals figure (latest verified is the MoET 2025 report figure above); any 2026 hotel occupancy figure; and any US State Dept advisory level (travel.state.gov returns HTTP 403 for all three passes, so no US-facing advisory is claimed)
