Transfer before October 1: the September 2026 devaluation alert
Chase→Hyatt flips to 4:3 on Oct 1 for CSP and Ink Preferred holders; Wyndham and Thailand change Sep 15. Dated rows and what to do by Sep 30.

The premise
Three devaluations land inside a 17-day window — October 1 for the big one, September 15 for the other two — and most of the points internet is still showing you a monthly valuations table with no deadline on it. Here’s the gap in one fetch: on September 1, 2026, Upgraded Points published its September valuations with Ultimate Rewards at 2.0¢ and Hyatt at 1.4¢ per point — a static table with no per-card transfer-ratio split, no mention of the October 1 cutoff, and no what-changed section (verified against the live page, Sep 12, 2026). That’s exactly the wrong shape for this month. Below: the dated rows, the deadlines, and what each one means for what you hold.
The dated rows
| Program | What changes | Effective | Who’s affected | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chase → Hyatt transfers | 1:1 → 4:3 (≈25% fewer Hyatt points per UR point) | Oct 1, 2026 (existing cardholders; already live for applicants on/after Jun 15) | Sapphire Preferred, Ink Business Preferred, Ink Plus, Corporate Flex | Frequent Miler, Jun 10 + Jul 29, 2026 |
| Chase → Hyatt transfers | Stays 1:1 | — | Sapphire Reserve + Reserve for Business | Frequent Miler, Jun 10 + Jul 29, 2026 |
| Wyndham award tiers | 7,500 tier drops to 5,000; 15K/30K unchanged; new 45,000 top tier | Sep 15, 2026 | All members; pre-Sep-15 bookings honored, auto-refund if a booked property’s price drops | Frequent Miler, Sep 9, 2026 |
| Thailand visa-free stay | 60 → 30 days (tourism-only; 60-country list; 15 days for Seychelles/Mauritius; VoA unchanged at 3) | Sep 15, 2026 | Tourist entries on/after Sep 15; arrivals before the cut keep 60 days | Royal Gazette, Aug 31, 2026 (via Thaiger, Khaleej Times) |
Two precision notes the table can’t hold. First, the Chase 4:3 is Hyatt-specific — it is not a blanket devaluation of Ultimate Rewards transfers; the article’s framing reports airline transfers (United, Southwest, etc.) as unaffected, but the confirmed damage is on the hotel line. Second, the change is already live for anyone who applied for an affected card on or after June 15, 2026 — October 1 is the date that matters only if you’ve held the card since before then.
What to do by September 30
If you hold Sapphire Preferred or an Ink Business Preferred (or Ink Plus / Corporate Flex) and you will ever stay at a Hyatt:
- Transfer before October 1. Every transfer completed through September 30 processes at 1:1 and lands as World of Hyatt points — Hyatt’s own points aren’t touched by a Chase-side ratio change. From October 1, the same UR balance buys ~25% fewer Hyatt points.
- The Frequent Miler worked example is the cleanest way to feel it: 27,000 UR points transferred after the change buys about what 20,000 UR buys today at a 20,000-point Hyatt property. That’s a hotel night you’re giving away by waiting.
- Transfers run in 1,000-point increments — bank the remainder before the flip rather than leaving an orphaned balance that transfers at the worse ratio later [inferred mechanic, per the Jun 10 analysis].
- Only transfer what you’ll actually redeem. This is a “never hoard” move, not a “hoard harder” move — points parked at Hyatt don’t earn, and Hyatt already devalued its own award chart on May 20, 2026 (100 price points; Frequent Miler, Jun 10, 2026).
If you hold Sapphire Reserve (or Reserve for Business): do nothing. You keep 1:1 to Hyatt. One caution from the same analysis: don’t reflexively downgrade Reserve → Preferred in a fee-cutting mood before you price this exact trade-off.
If you book Wyndham award nights: book by Monday, September 14. Properties at the 7,500 tier drop to 5,000 — cheaper for cheap properties — but the new 45,000 top tier is a live price increase for the expensive end. Pre-Sep-15 bookings are honored at the booked price even if the property moves up, and Wyndham auto-refunds points if a booked property’s price drops (Frequent Miler, Sep 9, 2026). Booking early is strictly the dominant move.
If Thailand is in your plan: land on or before September 14. Entries on/after September 15 get 30 days (tourism-only, 60-country list; 15 days for Seychelles/Mauritius; Visa-on-Arrival stays at 3), while arrivals before the cut keep the 60-day stay (Royal Gazette, Aug 31, 2026). This one is a travel-timing problem, not a points problem — but it’s the same deadline week, which is why it belongs in this alert.
What your points are actually worth after October 1
The valuations-table number you’ve been reading — 2.0¢ per Ultimate Rewards point — is now a card-dependent fiction. For Sapphire Preferred and Ink Preferred holders transferring to Hyatt, the marginal transfer value drops by the 4:3 ratio the moment October 1 hits: the same 1.4¢-ish Hyatt redemption value is reached with ~33% more UR points spent. A valuations table that prints one number per program with no per-card split, no ratio row, and no deadline box isn’t wrong so much as untimely — and untimely is expensive in a month with a hard cutoff.
The honest post-October-1 value stack [inferred arithmetic from confirmed ratios — recompute against your own redemption]:
- CSR holder, Hyatt transfer: unchanged, 1:1.
- CSP/Ink Preferred holder, Hyatt transfer: −25% on every point from Oct 1.
- Any holder, airline transfers: reported unaffected by this change — but verify the specific partner before building a strategy on it.
Also in the window, smaller but dated: the Chase Freedom Q3 bonus categories require activation and end September 30 (The Points Guy, Sep 9, 2026), and the American–Hyatt enhanced partnership is winding down with a new Delta–Hyatt partnership replacing the alignment (The Points Guy, Sep 9, 2026 — announced, no effective date verified; treat as in-progress, not a dated devaluation).
FAQ
Do my Hyatt points lose value on October 1?
No — the change is on the Chase side. World of Hyatt points you already hold are unaffected. What changes is the exchange rate for new transfers: from October 1, Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred (plus Ink Plus and Corporate Flex) holders transfer at 4:3 instead of 1:1. Points transferred before October 1 land at the full 1:1 rate.

Does the 4:3 ratio hit all Chase transfer partners?
No — the confirmed change is Hyatt-specific. The Frequent Miler reporting frames airline transfers (United, Southwest, etc.) as unaffected. Verify the live ratio for your specific partner in the Chase portal before any large transfer — that check is free and the stakes here are 25% of a balance.

I have Sapphire Reserve. Should I transfer now anyway?
You don't need to — Reserve and Reserve for Business keep the 1:1 Hyatt ratio. Transfer when you have a redemption ready, not before. The one exception: if you're considering downgrading Reserve to Preferred, price the 1:1-vs-4:3 difference first, because the downgrade moves you onto the reduced ratio.

Are Wyndham award nights getting more expensive or cheaper?
Both, depending on the property: the low tier drops from 7,500 to 5,000 points (cheaper), 15K and 30K tiers are unchanged, and a new 45,000-point top tier is added (more expensive for premium properties). Effective September 15, 2026. Bookings made before the change are honored at the booked price, and Wyndham auto-refunds points if your booked property's price drops — so booking before September 15 is the safe play either way.

Is Thailand's visa change only for tourists?
Yes — the 60-to-30-day reduction effective September 15, 2026 applies to the tourism exemption (60 eligible countries at 30 days, Seychelles/Mauritius at 15, Visa-on-Arrival unchanged). It does not cover business or work stays. If you arrive on or before September 14, you keep the 60-day stay.

The 2026 lesson this alert keeps teaching: devaluations arrive as effective dates, not opinions — and every one of them has a last good day. This window’s are September 14, September 15, and October 1. After that, the math is just worse and nobody owes you a reminder.
